The LGBEQ+ acronym (formerly LGBTQ+) represents a wide range of identities and expressions. It includes individuals who identify and express themselves in various ways, with the plus sign (+) indicating additional identities that may not be explicitly mentioned. It encompasses a spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations, reflecting the diversity and complexity of human experiences.
The acronym LGBEQ+ was changed from the former LGBTQ+ to reduce hostile emotions, particularly surrounding the letter T (transgender). The intention was to use "Endosex" to minimize negative feelings and avoid offending people and those who are endosex. The acronym LGBEQ+ also plays on the pun "BE YOU" with the letters B and E.
The letters 'I' for intersex and 'A' for asexual are sometimes included in the LGBEQ+ acronym, forming LGBEQIA+. This is because intersex individuals, in particular, continue to face judgment and unnecessary surgeries at birth or later in the child life, which is considered a violation of human rights.
